Discreet Security for the British Normandy Memorial

Client: British Normandy Memorial

Industry: Historical

Location: Normandy, France

Year: 2021 (Initial Installation), 2024 (Expansion)

Background

D-Day and the Battle of Normandy in 1944 opened the way to Europe's liberation and the end of World War II. British armed forces played a central role in these momentous events, and more than 22,000 made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

Until 2021, no single memorial was dedicated to their remembrance. After nearly six years of hard work, it opened on Sunday, June 6, 2021.

Challenge

Our primary challenge was to design, supply, and install a surveillance system that offered comprehensive coverage without detracting from its aesthetic appeal. Traditional security cameras would have disrupted the site's visual integrity, necessitating a carefully designed, bespoke solution. Adding to the complexity, we were brought in when the project was already 80% complete, limiting our options.

Solution

To meet these unique requirements, we proposed the innovative use of a discreet camera installed on top of one of the memorial's flagpoles. Drawing on our extensive expertise in security systems, we recommended a Redvision camera known for its wireless functionality and round, ball-like shape. This camera seamlessly matched the decorative balls on top of the other flagpoles. This clever design ensured that the camera blended harmoniously with the memorial's architecture, remaining virtually undetectable.

We collaborated closely with both Redvision and the flagpole manufacturer, coordinating the design and fabrication process to ensure that all components fit together perfectly. The wireless camera system relays high-definition footage directly to the main administrative centre, providing continuous 24/7 surveillance without the need for intrusive cabling.

We perform annual maintenance on the security system to guarantee its ongoing performance and reliability.

Expansion

In 2024, the memorial site expanded to include a new visitors' centre, complete with a café and play centre. We extended the existing security system to cover this addition, employing the same discreet design principles and ensuring comprehensive protection.

King Charles formally opened the new visitors' centre in May 2024, a significant event where our team was on hand to ensure all security measures functioned seamlessly.

Our director, Matt, volunteered to assist with setup and ended up constructing the stage for The King!
